French Breakfast Puff

We were served these wonderful muffins at a Bed and Breakfast in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. What a treat!

Makes 12 small muffins or 6 medium ones

1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup milk

6 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Blend shortening, 1/2 cup sugar, and egg until smooth. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Blend flour mixture into shortening mixture, alternating with milk. Fill greased muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake at 350oF until golden brown (about 20-25 minutes). Roll immediately in melted butter, then in mixture of 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.
