German Style Hot Spiced Wine

From Bernd Brugge, January 1987. "...here is my favorite recipe for
mulled wine, or Gluehwein as it is called in Germany."
Mix all ingredients together and bring to a boil. Add sugar to taste. Cook for
another 10 minutes on a small flame, filter out the spices and serve with
cheese cut into cubes, grapes, nuts and mandarin oranges.
If you add 1/8 liter rum or brandy, you have a Bergsteiger-Gluehwein (mulled wine for mountaineers).
