Here Ye, Here Ye on the PA Beer Laws; Ask anyone beer drinker who is here on business or just for a couple days the routine they had to go to, to get beer.... 1) Stop at grocery store and look around for the beer isle, then walk out frustrated and head for the 7-11 2) get to the 7-11, look around briefly and finally ask the guy behind the counter and he says "...oh yea, you can get beer at the beer store around the corner". So off you go.... 3) At the beer store you say "FINALLY", but to your surprise, you can't buy the one six back you are looking for, but now you have to get a whole case. So you ask the guy and he finally sends you to the local bar a block from where you are staying and you have to pay twice the amount it acutally costs! who made up the rules anyway. Now to places where you can get GOOD beer. Mad Mex as people mentioned - typically 6 U.S. Micro beers on tap. Varies month to month. - sirrea navada products are regular. same with brooklyn lager Fat Heads South SIde - 8-10 good beers on tap (4 domestic, i think 14 total), typically include, Fuller's ESB, Sierra Nevada, Anchor, Brooklyn Larger, Bass Ale, Guiness. Have had at times, Pete's wicked ale, Sam Adam's Dark Wheat, Brooklyn Brown all on draft - typically have 100-130 bottled beers Sharp Edge -haven't been there in a while but, have had Spaten Optimator, Fuller's ESB, Pauliner Hefe-Weizen, Anchor all on draft. lots of bottles. any other places? rolf erickson@atc.alcoa.com Article 2474 of pgh.food: Path: fs7.ece.cmu.edu!cantaloupe.srv.cs.cmu.edu!nntp.club.cc.cmu.edu!newsfeed.pitt.edu!holmes.hgen.pitt.edu!tcox From: tcox@holmes.hgen.pitt.edu (Tara Matise) Newsgroups: pgh.food Subject: Re: Beer in Pittsburgh? I was in there a few months ago and they already had a decent selection of US microbrews and were planning to increase. But of course, here in PA, at the beer store you must buy by the case. For smaller quantities, several messages have been written on this topic, mentioning bar's such as Chiodo's, Sharp Edge, Mad Mex, Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, and others. If there isn't one already, sounds like this group is ready for an FAQ. "Bad experiences" range from the owner guaranteeing me he had something when he didn't to just plain being unfriendly and hard to deal with. My understanding is that the distributor next to Chief's on Craig carries microbrews, and I know they carry all the well-known better beers (Bass, Guiness, etc.). I've always found what I wanted and had good service from this distributor, but I've never known their name :-). Okay, so once or twice I couldn't get what I wanted already cold, but hey .... I think it's called Brandt's. I don't know about their location in the Strip, but their main warehouse is located on the South Side under the Big Clock at 22nd and Jane. Go up the steps into the office during business hours, then with the invoice in hand wander down into the warehouse and hail a guy on a forklift to get you your cold case(s). They have a very good selection of Belgian beers at competitive prices. Another place which Doug pointed out to me and which stocks a good selection of microbrews (including Celis White) is Save On Beer in North Hills Village Mall on McKnight Road (gag!). I think that their prices on imported beers are higher than Brandt's, but they have a wider selection of the locally popular microbrewskies.
