The hardest part of going there is forcing yourself through the door - the place is a dive/greasy spoon. The two fellows working there, I suspect that one is the owner, were very friendly. (It may have helped that we had a Jamaican in our group, but whose to say?) We all started with beef patties which were quite good, but could have been a little hotter (spce wise). The each of the four of us ordered something different: I had the brown stew chicken, Lorraine had the jerk chicken, Kirk had the steamed snapper and Aimee had the curry goat. Kirk (who is Jamaican) said that all of the food was authentic tasting. We all enjoyed our meals immensely. Lorraine claimed that the curry goat was not as good as some of the goat she had eaten in Africa, but that for the US, it was quite good. The jerk chicken was the only spicy hot dish, but it was quite mild. All of the dinners came with a salad (small bowl with lettuce and tomato) and rice with beans, which was really good. They do not have a liquor license, so bring your own. The prices are also very reasonable: $7 for the main courses, which were good size servings. We had good jerk chicken, shrimp curry, ginger beer and killer meat patties and plantains. -- --- It is kind of strange being in CS theory, given computers really do exist. Liberty over > Jamaica Jamaica. In my opinion, cleaning shrimp involves removing the vein (gut), and the head. The legs are perfectly clean and wholesome. By all means, go to the Royal West Indian restaurant. It's definitely good, and well worth a visit. But the food at Jamaica Jamaica is definitely better. The jerk pork in particular, I strongly recommend. Don't forget to drink it with lashings of (regrettably non-alcoholic) ginger beer. Michael p.s. if you, like me, can bring yourself actually to enjoy shrimp legs, when well prepared, I heartily recommend the dry salt shrimp (hmmm, is that the name?) at the Chinese restaurant (er, something kitchen?) on Atwood (near Larry and Carroll's pizza and the Sod (love that name) bar). p.p.s. the reason I regret the lack of alcohol in the ginger beer is not because I particularly like alcohol. In fact I don't. I just think the flavour is better for brewed, as opposed to compound, ginger beer. p.p.s. the sticks in the jerk pork and jerk chicken are supposed to be there. They are spices. p.p.p.s Jamaica Jamaica will deliver to campus. Their number is 281 3726. Give them good directions though. ------- Michael Witbrock. witbrock@cs.cmu.edu this is a NCSA mosaic hyper-document URL.
